ABVP-Delhi Police Nexus stands naked!
Reclaim DU … Let’s put a stop to this hooliganism and reign of muscle raj !

23.2.2017

Everytime the All India ‘Vanar’ Parishad (ABVP) vandalizes a campus anywhere in the country, attacks students and professors or hatches a plan along with sycophant media and state to castigate an entire academic institution, we are left astonished – is there a boundary for the monkey brigade where they stop with their vile agenda and sole program of spreading violence and terror in campuses all over the country?

On 21ST February, the uninvited shameless hooligans of ABVP stormed at a program called ‘Cultures of Protest’, organized by the English department and literary society of Ramjas College of Delhi University and attacked the organizers, abused the participants for daring to ask questions, for their endeavor to keep the culture of dissent on, for going against RSS-BJP-ABVP’s fascist project, for merely raising their support for academic debate. Not only the program was disrupted, violence was unleashed by ABVP by locking the doors of the seminar room, cutting off electricity and throwing stones, bricks, pieces of wood and iron rods which injured some students badly. To fan the mass paranoia and ignite mob fury, the ABVP goons threatened the administration with dire consequences, in case Umar Khalid’s, a research scholar from JNU, presentation on ‘War on Adivasis’ was not cancelled. And Delhi police shamelessly provided them all support by shrugging off responsibility to protect Umar and blamed the organizers. ABVP openly shouted ‘ye andar ki baat hai, police hamare saath hai’ (this is the inside story, police is with us).
Even when the organizers cancelled Umar’s presentation and held a peaceful rally in the college to register their protest, as soon as they started the next session the meaniac, frenzied goons went on a rampage on the corridors of Ramjas – assaulting women, attacking students, locking the common students and professors inside seminar room, breaking windows and chairs. The police refused to guarantee the safety of students attending the seminar and instead of taking action against ABVP mob, it shamelessly escorted the students of Ramjas outside their college. The ABVP goons celebrated their ‘victory’ and on their way tried to disrupt another event at Arts Faculty which was organised by ‘Pinjra Tod’ as a public hearing for problems faced by girls living in PGs. The attack by misogynist ABVP was tackled by Delhi Police by barricading the Pinjra Tod event, not allowing the common students to attend it. The barricades were removed later. The Ramjas seminar was a 2 day event. While it was disrupted on first day, the second day program had to be cancelled due to threats from ABVP.

Yesterday, when the university community of DU came together in protesting against the violence by Vanar Parishad, the riotous Vanars attacked the common students, faculty members and journalists with bricks, stones and hurled abuses. They thrashed their own teachers on streets and hurled abuses! In the morning itself, ABVP entered Ramjas and started beating students who were campaigning for the protest and held them captive for hours to stop them from joining the protest. The police stood as mere spectator, watching frenzied goons running amok the North Campus streets, leaving many students and teachers bleeding and injured. Still the students and teachers continued their rally to Maurice Nagar Police Station where they were continuosly attacked by ABVP in full presence of police. Police refused to register any FIR against their masters i.e. ABVP which is affiliated to RSS-BJP. Instead, the peaceful gathering was brutally lathi charged by the police without any warning and around 300 students were detained by the police in three buses and left at Hauz Khas metro station some hours later. Female students were openly assaulted and abused by male police and heavy police force was deployed in the university. The situation is still very tense in Delhi University and reports are coming of threats and violence by ABVP on common students who stay in the campus.

An important issue which this incident has raised is the rising violence by fascist forces and their ally in the form if police in the campus. ABVP goons have always attacked common students, teachers and activists in the campus and have disrupted seminars, academic programs and public meetings. They have used violence to impose their communal and fascist ideas in the curriculum. While universities are always under the threat of all anti-people governments who do not allow democratic debates in the campuses, BJP-RSS-ABVP use the methods of terror to intimidate students and teachers. The ABVP-university administration-police nexus wants to impose one single ideology upon the campus which is promoted by the current RSS-BJP regime at the Centre. We, on the other hand, believe that university should be a democratic space for multiple ideas and debates. We call upon the karmcharis, students and teachers to unite in the name of democratic culture in the university.
While ABVP calls itself a students’ organization and has controlled Delhi university students union for decades now, it has never raised any issue of the students and has always managed to win elections by money-muscle power. Instead, it plays the greatest role in attacking and intimidating the democratic and progressive organizations and individuals who raise a voice against anti-student policies of the government.

When have we ever heard ABVP protesting against abrupt fee-hike in any campus in the country? When have we ever seen them standing against casteist persecution of a dalit student by an ‘upper’ caste teacher? When have we ever heard the hooligans standing with the students against administration’s tyranny? When has anyone seen them participating in any debate? We would only be befooling ourselves if we expect anything better from the ABVP – we are still living in fools’ paradise, if we expect ABVP to allow space for healthy and democratic discussions – if we think that Saffron brigade would respect democracy and deliberation. It is a clear fight between ‘debate’ and ‘imposition’, ‘deliberation’ against ‘hooliganism’, ‘democracy’ against ‘fascism’. There is no way we can share a ‘democratic space’ with Saffron brigade as they are inherently anti-democratic and they pay heed to no other language but the language of RESISTANCE. If we are to claim our space in DU, to breathe and debate, to deliberate and not getting thrashed by Vanar hooligans – we have to build united resistance against them, decimate their last power base through debates, resistance or force – if they possess muscle and money power, we have intellect – if they have state support, we have all the students, teachers, non teaching staff of our campuses on our side – they are a group of hooligans, we are the university!
